Tems Speaks Out on Disrespect Towards Women in Nigerian Music Industry
Tems speaks out on lack of respect for women in Nigeria’s music industry.
She launches “The Leading Vibe Initiative” to empower and guide aspiring female artists toward lasting success.
Grammy award-winning artist Temilade Openiyi, better known as Tems, has voiced her concern over the way women are treated in Nigeria’s music scene, stressing that they often face a lack of respect.

In a recent BBC interview, Tems revealed that her early days in the industry were marked by struggles to be taken seriously because of her gender. “People don’t really respect women in the industry,” she said.
Determined to change this narrative, the singer launched “The Leading Vibe Initiative”, a platform she says is dedicated to “changing the way women see themselves in music” by providing them with greater access to opportunities, wider audiences, and more chances for success.
Tems also urged aspiring female musicians to be intentional about their careers, clearly defining their personal values, professional goals, and limits. She challenged them to ask themselves, “What are the things that you wouldn’t do for fame and the things that you would do?”
