Nigeria’s Internet Users Drop in June as Data Consumption Holds Steady
Nigeria’s active internet subscriptions dipped slightly to 141.1 million in June, NCC reports.
Data usage hit a new high, driven by growing urban demand and expanding connectivity needs.
Active internet subscriptions across mobile, fixed, and VOIP networks in Nigeria fell to 141.1 million in June, marking a 0.3% drop from 141.5 million in May, according to the latest data from the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC).
Mobile operators MTN, Airtel, Globacom, and 9mobile continued to dominate the market with a combined 140.6 million subscriptions. Internet Service Providers and other operators accounted for the remaining 528,633 subscriptions as of the end of June.
Despite the slight decline in subscriber numbers, data consumption continued its upward trend. Nigerians used 1.044 million terabytes of data in June, slightly higher than the 1.043 million terabytes consumed in May which was already the highest monthly usage recorded since January 2023.
Industry players attribute the surge in data demand to the rapid urban growth in cities such as Lagos, where increasing numbers of people, businesses, and connected devices are driving record bandwidth consumption. In response, telecom operators are expanding network capacity to keep pace with the rising demand.
