Daniel Bwala, Special Adviser to President Bola Tinubu on Policy Communication, has stated that no political figure, including former President Goodluck Jonathan, stands a chance of defeating Tinubu in the 2027 presidential election.
Speaking on Politics Today, a Channels Television program, on Wednesday, August 13, Bwala dismissed ongoing calls for Jonathan to contest, describing them as a plot to damage the former leader’s hard-earned reputation. He said certain individuals were trying to lure Jonathan back into the political arena for selfish reasons, despite the international profile he has built since leaving office.
According to Bwala, the political environment in southern Nigeria, where Jonathan hails from, is now strongly aligned with Tinubu, with the support of several governors. He also cast doubt on the intentions of some northern politicians urging Jonathan to run, pointing out that many of them were among those who opposed him during his presidency.
Bwala questioned what assurance Jonathan could have that these individuals now mean well for him, adding that he believed Jonathan was wise enough to recognise the trap. He maintained that Tinubu remains the most formidable political figure in the country at the moment.
“If President Jonathan decides to run, let me tell you, I have seen the political climate in Nigeria today, and I will speak to facts, not conjecture. There is not a single politician that has the capacity to knock off President Bola Tinubu,” Bwala said.
As of now, Jonathan has not issued any public statement on whether he will join the 2027 presidential race.
