Ex-Osinbajo Spokesman Criticizes Tinubu Government Over KWAM 1’s Appointment as Ambassador

Laolu Akande has faulted the government for swiftly naming KWAM 1 an aviation ambassador.

He said the move sends the wrong signal after the musician’s recent airport misconduct.

Laolu Akande, former spokesperson to ex-Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, has criticized President Bola Tinubu’s administration for appointing Fuji musician Wasiu Ayinde Marshal, popularly known as KWAM 1, as an ambassador.

Speaking on Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily on Thursday, Akande questioned the speed at which the recognition was given, noting that it came shortly after KWAM 1 violated airport rules at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja.

His comments followed Wednesday’s announcement by the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, who revealed that the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) had reduced KWAM 1’s flight ban to one month. Keyamo added that the musician would collaborate with the NCAA to promote awareness on proper conduct within aviation security.

Reacting to this, Akande said, “This may be a right thing but this is not the right thing now. You can be shoveling down somebody who represented misbehavior, who endangered a flight, and everybody, indeed, and as a matter of fact, who almost breached national security.

“You can’t simply in one week say the person is an ambassador for protocol and security at the airport. That’s not done… If you want to make him an ambassador, wait down the road. It’s pretty too early in the game. It sends the wrong signals.”

He stressed that such actions from government officials were inappropriate and could have a negative impact on public perception.
