Nigeria’s diplomatic community is in mourning after the passing of Taofik Coker, the country’s Consul-General in Buea, Cameroon. He died on August 16, 2025, at the age of 59, following a brief illness.

The Federal Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed his death in a statement released on Wednesday. Ministry spokesperson Kimiebi Ebienfa described Coker as a hard-working and dedicated career diplomat who served Nigeria with distinction, commitment, and professionalism. He added that Coker’s sudden death is a significant loss to both the nation and the diplomatic community.
President Bola Tinubu appointed Coker in April 2024 and began his duties the following month. Upon assuming office, he pledged to strengthen bilateral relations between Nigeria and Cameroon, with a focus on trade, security, and cultural exchange.
Before his posting in Buea, Coker had a distinguished career in Nigeria’s foreign service, holding positions at several missions abroad, including in Conakry, Guinea, and Shanghai, China. Colleagues remember him as a dedicated diplomat who consistently advanced Nigeria’s interests on the global stage.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs expressed its condolences to Coker’s family, friends, and associates, offering prayers for the peace of his soul.
