Dumebi Kachikwu Promises to Reinstate Fuel Subsidy if Elected President in 2027
Former ADC presidential candidate Dumebi Kachikwu says he will reinstate fuel subsidy if elected in 2027.
He argued corruption, not the policy itself, was responsible for Nigeria’s subsidy failures and hardships.
Dumebi Kachikwu, the former presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), has pledged to restore Nigeria’s fuel subsidy regime if he is elected President in 2027. He insists that the policy is not inherently flawed but has been compromised by corruption and mismanagement.

In a recent interview, Kachikwu argued that poor Nigerians should not bear the consequences of systemic inefficiencies. He believes that instead of abolishing the subsidy, the government should focus on identifying and prosecuting those who have exploited the system. “The issue has never been the subsidy itself, but rather those who abused it. The appropriate response is to prosecute them and restore order to the system,” he stated.
Kachikwu also challenged the common belief that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu eliminated the subsidy on the day of his inauguration in May 2023. He clarified that the previous administration had effectively initiated the removal of the subsidy to him; the government under the late President Muhammadu Buhari did not make provisions for subsidy payments in its 2023 budget, leaving Tinubu with no choice but to announce its discontinuation. “Many people, rightly or wrongly, believe that Tinubu removed the subsidies. However, Buhari’s administration didn’t allocate funds for it in the budget. Tinubu only confirmed what was already evident when he took office,” Kachikwu noted.
The ADC chieftain stated that revisiting the subsidy policy would be part of his broader agenda to alleviate the economic burdens faced by ordinary Nigerians, emphasizing that affordability and fairness must guide the country’s energy policy.
