Expired Drugs Valued at N3.77bn Handed to NAFDAC by Customs
Customs officers in Lagos handed expired drugs worth N3.77 billion to NAFDAC officials.
The seizure included cartons of Tramadol, Codeine, and other harmful pharmaceuticals packed in trucks.
The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Federal Operations Unit (FOU) Zone ‘A’, has handed over expired drugs valued at N3.77 billion to the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC).

The Public Relations Officer of the command, Chief Superintendent Hussaini Abdullahi, confirmed this in Lagos. He explained that the handover took place on August 25 during the visit of Dr. Martin Iluyomade, NAFDAC’s new Director of Enforcement and Investigation.

Controller of the unit, Comptroller Mohammed Shu’aibu, said the move reflects the existing memorandum of understanding between NCS and NAFDAC, aimed at curbing fake and harmful products.
“This collaboration helps us stop the smuggling and importation of dangerous drugs,” he stated.
Shu’aibu disclosed that three trucks containing expired pharmaceuticals were transferred. The drugs, packed in cartons and sacks, included Tramadol, Codine Syrup, Amlodipine, Hyergra, Firegra, and other brands. He added that their duty-paid value stood at N3.77 billion.
According to him, the Service will continue to hand over such items to NAFDAC as investigations progress. He also assured the public that Customs is committed to preventing expired and counterfeit drugs from reaching the market.
Receiving the consignments on behalf of the NAFDAC Director-General, Dr. Iluyomade praised Customs for their commitment and described the partnership as a vital step in protecting public health.
