Kano Police have begun probing the death of 14-year-old Fatima Sulaiman, found hanging at home.
Her family suspects foul play, while authorities vow a thorough investigation to ensure justice.
The Kano State Police Command has launched a full investigation into the death of 14-year-old Fatima Sulaiman, whose body was discovered hanging inside her family home in Dandinshe Yamma Quarters, Dala Local Government Area, on Saturday, August 23.
The incident has left the teenager’s family and community in shock and mourning. According to her mother, Malama Madina Inuwa Makwalla, Fatima had excused herself to use the toilet shortly before the family left to visit a relative at a nearby hospital. “That was the last time I saw her alive,” she said tearfully.
When the family returned later that evening, they found the main gate locked from inside. Attempts to unlock it with a spare key failed until her father, Malam Sulaiman, scaled the fence. Inside the house, he discovered their daughter’s lifeless body hanging by a window, prompting him to raise the alarm. Neighbors rushed to the scene as the family alerted the police.
Witnesses suggested that the manner of her death indicated possible foul play, claiming her neck appeared broken before she was hanged. Her father confirmed that the police were immediately contacted, and her body was taken to Murtala Muhammad Specialist Hospital, where doctors confirmed she had already passed away.
The distraught family said they have no knowledge of who might be responsible for what they described as a “terrible tragedy,” urging authorities to uncover the truth. “We hand everything over to Almighty Allah, and we pray that those behind this crime will be exposed,” Malam Sulaiman said.
Police spokesperson SP Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa confirmed the case, stating that officers swiftly responded after receiving a distress call. “The body of the deceased was recovered and taken to the hospital, where death was certified. A thorough investigation has commenced to establish the real cause and ensure justice is served,” he assured.
Neighbors described Fatima as a respectful and kind teenager who related peacefully with those around her. She has since been buried according to Islamic rites, with hundreds of mourners in attendance.
The police pledged to leave no stone unturned in unraveling the circumstances of Fatima’s death, which has sparked grief and concern across the community.
