El-Rufai Rules Out 2027 Ambition, Vows to Support Efforts Against “Oppressors”
Former Kaduna governor Nasir El-Rufai says he will not contest any position in 2027.
He vowed instead to support opposition efforts to remove what he called “oppressors” in power.
Nasir El-Rufai, the former Governor of Kaduna State, has announced that he will not seek any political office in the upcoming 2027 general elections. Instead, he pledged to work with others to unseat what he described as “oppressors” at both state and national levels.

El-Rufai made this known in Kaduna on Wednesday, August 27, while addressing a group of opposition youths who recently defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the African Democratic Congress (ADC) under the leadership of Aliyu Bello.
Taking a jab at the present administration, the former governor accused the government of deceiving Nigerians with “daily lies,” insisting that citizens are already aware of its failures.
“This is a government that does nothing but lie every day. Everyone’s conscience tells them the truth. I am not contesting for anything; I don’t want to go to the Senate. I am not contesting for any position. That is why I am calling on you: let us join hands and ensure we remove the oppressors,” he said.
El-Rufai revealed that after completing his two-term tenure as Kaduna governor, his original plan was to retire from partisan politics and rest. However, recent developments in the country, he said, have compelled him to re-engage not for personal ambition, but to support efforts aimed at producing credible leadership.
“When I finished my tenure as governor of Kaduna, I intended to rest. However, given the current state of affairs, I believe we must play our part in bringing about better leadership. That is why we are back in politics,” he added.
With his statement, El-Rufai ruled out speculations about a possible Senate bid or presidential ambition in 2027, positioning himself instead as a political ally willing to back reformist movements.
