Interior Minister Confirms Tinubu Approval of Lifetime Pay for Officers

The Minister of Interior has introduced a welfare policy granting lifetime salaries to senior retirees.

Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo said the initiative, approved by President Tinubu, strengthens officers’ welfare nationwide.

The Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, has unveiled a new welfare policy that grants lifetime salary benefits to senior officers retiring from the rank of Deputy Controller, Comptroller, or Commandant-General and above.

The policy, which aims to improve the welfare of officers across agencies under the ministry, received the approval of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

Tunji-Ojo made the disclosure on Thursday during the 2025 Ministerial Retreat, where he outlined key achievements of his ministry and reaffirmed its commitment to enhancing the capacity and performance of all its agencies.

A statement released by DCF P.O. Abraham, the National PRO and Head of Corporate Services of the Federal Fire Service, confirmed the announcement and conveyed the minister’s gratitude to President Tinubu for what he described as consistent and unwavering support.

According to the minister, the administration has cleared the long-standing backlog of staff promotions, with more than 50,000 officers elevated in the past two years. He explained that future promotions will be based on a performance-driven system designed to reward merit and capacity.

Highlighting ongoing reforms, Tunji-Ojo revealed that new training manuals have been developed to standardize operations across agencies. He also announced the construction of a modern Fire Academy, designed to compete with globally recognized institutions such as the Arizona Fire Academy.

The minister further stressed the need to prioritize mental health and well-being in the workplace, assuring officers that the ministry would continue to provide the necessary support in this regard.

In addition, he tasked the Federal Fire Service with pursuing partnerships with the private sector, stating that such collaborations are vital for advancing infrastructure, modernizing equipment, and improving service delivery in the country’s firefighting sector.
