UNIBEN Bars Political and Union Activities on Campuses
The University of Benin has prohibited use of its facilities for political or union activities.
Management said the decision preserves campuses strictly for learning, research, and community-focused academic engagements.
The University of Benin (UNIBEN) has announced a ban on the use of its facilities for political and union activities across its Ugbowo and Ekhewan campuses.

In a statement released on Thursday, the institution’s Public Relations Officer, Benedicta Ehanire, explained that the directive is to ensure that university grounds are reserved strictly for academic purposes. She noted that facility managers had been instructed not to approve requests for events that fall outside the school’s academic mandate.
According to the statement, the management emphasized its disapproval of using the institution’s halls or spaces for political campaigns, union meetings, or rallies without prior consent. It further clarified that staff and student union leaders had been advised against hosting any gathering within the university premises unless formal approval is granted.
The institution maintained that the policy is aimed at safeguarding its academic environment from activities capable of undermining its core mission of learning, research, and community service.
