Lagos Police Ban Egungun Street Parades, Restrict Celebrations to Approved Venues
Lagos police have imposed strict rules on Egungun festival, banning public street processions statewide.
Authorities say the measure will curb violence, protect residents, and ensure peaceful traditional celebrations.
The Lagos State Police Command has declared stringent limitations on the ongoing Egungun festival, stating that all events must take place in approved locations throughout the state.

This directive, announced on Sunday by the Command’s spokesperson, CSP Benjamin Hundeyin, follows reports of violent confrontations, harassment of residents, and property damage associated with masquerade events in recent days.
According to the order, public street processions featuring Egungun masquerades and their followers are now prohibited.
Festival organizers must first inform the Commissioner of Police and request security support before showcasing masquerades in public areas.
Hundeyin cautioned that the police would take strong action against offenders.
“The Command will not hesitate to enforce the full extent of the law on any Egungun masquerade, their supporters, or followers who disrupt public order, violate human rights, or engage in actions that could disturb the peace,” he stated.
The police emphasized that the restriction aims to protect lives and property, as well as safeguard the rights of other residents during the traditional celebrations.
The announcement follows multiple incidents of violence reported in some parts of Lagos, where rival groups allegedly clashed during the festival. The Command explained that curbing further escalation was necessary to preserve religious harmony and public safety.
Police also appealed to traditional leaders, masquerade practitioners, and festival supporters to cooperate with law enforcement and ensure compliance with the new guidelines.
“Maintaining peace in Lagos is a collective responsibility. We expect participants to conduct themselves responsibly and within the limits of the law,” the statement added.
