The state police spokesperson, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, confirmed the incident in a statement issued on Wednesday. He said the event happened on Tuesday evening, behind the Grace of God Mission Church, off NEPA Road in Awada.

According to Ikenga, officers from the Awada Division rushed to the scene immediately after receiving a distress call. They secured the area to protect bystanders and worked with members of the public to persuade Onyiba to come down safely after several tense minutes.

The man was later taken into custody, where he disclosed his identity to the police.

The Commissioner of Police in Anambra, CP Ikioye Orutugu, has directed that Onyiba undergo both medical and mental health assessments. He also pledged that the command would ensure the man receives the necessary care and support.

In its message to residents, the police command appealed to the public to adopt peaceful and legal means of dealing with personal problems.

“People facing difficulties are encouraged to confide in family, friends, or recognized support groups rather than resorting to harmful actions,” the statement advised.
