Team Nigeria Set for Tokyo 2025 with 15 Athletes Across 11 Disciplines
Tobi Amusan will lead Nigeria’s 15-athlete squad to the 2025 World Athletics Championships in Tokyo.
The squad also includes long jumper Ese Brume and other top athletes across track and field.
Nigeria’s sprint hurdler, Tobi Amusan, will headline a 15-athlete squad named by the Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN) for the 2025 World Athletics Championships, set to begin on September 13 in Tokyo, Japan.

The events featured encompass the men’s and women’s 100 meters, the women’s 100-meter hurdles, the men’s 200 meters, the men’s 400 meters, the men’s 400-meter hurdles, long jump events for both genders, as well as the men’s shot put, the women’s discus, and the women’s hammer throw.
Amusan, Nigeria’s golden girl of athletics, will once again seek to replicate her 2022 heroics in Eugene, Oregon, where she became the country’s first global champion and world record holder in the 100m hurdles. She skipped the Diamond League finals in Zurich last week to concentrate fully on Tokyo.
Ese Brume, Nigeria’s Olympic bronze medalist and multiple-time global medalist in the women’s long jump, will be another major medal contender. Joining her are 400m hurdles prospect Nathaniel Ezekiel, shot put star Chukwuebuka Enekwechi, and sprint duo Rosemary Chukwuma and Prestina Ochonogor.
The squad also features Chioma Onyekwere Lyons, Obiageri Amaechi, Oyesade Olatoye, Kayinsola Ajayi, Israel Okon, Udodi Onwuzurike, Samuel Ogazi, Chidi Okezie, and Charles Godfred.
The Tokyo championships mark the 20th edition of the World Athletics Championships, with the Japan National Stadium set to welcome the world’s best athletes for 10 days of top-class competition.
Nigeria will be banking on its mix of experienced medalists and rising stars to deliver a strong showing.
