NYSC Urges Graduates to Focus on Entrepreneurship and Global Competence

NYSC has urged Nigerian graduates to embrace entrepreneurship, innovation, and global professionalism instead of relying on job hunting.

The DG, Brigadier General Olakunle Nafiu, stressed that youths must drive economic growth and unity.

The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has called on Nigerian graduates to look beyond job hunting and embrace roles as innovators, business owners, investors, and professionals with international recognition.

The Director General of NYSC, Brigadier General Olakunle Nafiu, made the appeal in Abuja during the fourth meeting between the scheme and leaders of professional and regulatory organizations. He commended their contribution to a seamless mobilisation process, stressing that professional certifications and skills should complement academic qualifications to enhance employability and impact.

Reflecting on the history of the scheme, Nafiu noted that for over five decades, the NYSC has promoted unity and national development by preparing young Nigerians for service. According to him, graduates must now shift their mindset. “It is not enough to wait for employment opportunities. Our graduates should aspire to create jobs, invest in the economy, and become professionals of global relevance,” he said.

He assured that the Corps remains committed to supplying the nation with skilled manpower, while also transforming the service year into what he described as a hub for professional growth, ethical leadership, and entrepreneurial creativity.

Expressing confidence in future prospects, Nafiu added: “With the right support, we can establish a culture of integrity and competence. The destiny of this country rests with our youths, and the way we empower them today will shape Nigeria’s strength, unity, and competitiveness tomorrow.”

Also speaking, the Director of Corps Mobilization, Abubakar Muhammed, acknowledged that the collaboration with professional bodies has produced positive results, particularly in improving mobilization processes and operational efficiency. However, he admitted that certain challenges in procedure still need to be addressed.

The meeting brought together representatives from the Ministry of Education, JAMB, NECO, NBTE, and other key stakeholders in the nation’s education and professional sectors.
