2026 World Cup Qualifiers: Super Eagles Set For Crucial Clashes

The Super Eagles are preparing for crucial World Cup qualifiers against Rwanda and South Africa this September.

Captain Troost-Ekong says the team is focused and ready to secure vital victories.

The Super Eagles of Nigeria are gearing up for two decisive 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying matches this month, first against Rwanda and then group leaders South Africa.

The team, led by Eric Chelle, has been training intensively in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, ahead of their Matchday 7 fixture against Rwanda’s Amavubi at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium on Saturday, 6th September. They will then travel to Bloemfontein to take on South Africa’s Bafana Bafana in a pivotal Matchday 8 clash on Tuesday, 9th September.

Team captain William Troost-Ekong has assured fans that the players are fully focused and motivated to deliver results.

“I think we’re really, really focused,” the Saudi-based defender told Modzero Sports. “The camp feels different. It’s been a busy summer, but everyone’s had a good preseason. The thing for us has been to refocus now and concentrate on how we can prepare for the game on Saturday.

“It’s so much about mindset.

Quality isn’t something we lack in this group; it’s about togetherness and understanding the importance of these games. Rwanda and South Africa also want to win, so it’s not just about desire. It’s about being better prepared and fighting together. The communication will take place on the field.”

Defender Ola Aina echoed his captain’s sentiments, admitting that the task ahead is challenging but achievable.

“We know we have a big challenge in front of us, but this is football. That’s the reality. We just have to play well and try to win. Everyone in the team wants the same thing, and that’s what we’re working towards.”

With only two rounds of fixtures remaining after these matches, the Super Eagles know that results against Rwanda and South Africa will be critical in keeping their qualification hopes alive. Victory in Uyo would provide momentum, while success in Bloemfontein could tilt the group standings in Nigeria’s favor ahead of the final qualifiers in October.

For Chelle and his squad, the mission is clear: secure maximum points and bring Nigeria closer to another World Cup appearance on the global stage in 2026.
