Nigerian Man Arrested for Duping Indian Woman of N9m on Pretext of Marriage
A Nigerian man, Oliver Ugwu Okechukwu, has been arrested in Mumbai for allegedly defrauding a Bagalkot woman of ₹5.5 lakh.
Police recovered phones, a laptop, and documents.
Police in Karnataka, India, have arrested a Nigerian national accused of duping a woman from Ilkal town, Bagalkot district, of ₹5.5 lakh under the guise of marriage.

Bagalkot Superintendent of Police (SP) Siddarth Goel confirmed that the suspect, identified as 47-year-old Oliver Ugwu Okechukwu, was apprehended by the Cyber Economic and Narcotics (CEN) police in Mumbai on Thursday, September 4, 2025.
Investigators said Oliver, who lived in Shivaji Nagar Bonkode Ganv, Khairane Thane, allegedly posed as “Satya Amit,” a London resident, on a matrimonial website. He befriended a divorcee seeking remarriage and promised to wed her.
About 18 months ago, Oliver reportedly called the woman claiming he had landed in India but that customs officers had seized US dollars worth ₹1 crore. He asked her to transfer ₹5.5 lakh to secure the release of the money. Trusting him, she wired the funds via RTGS. Shortly afterward, he cut off contact, prompting her to file a complaint with Bagalkot cybercrime police.
SP Goel said further investigation showed Oliver was operating with a fake identity and had conducted multiple transactions through PhonePe and Google Pay. CCTV footage from shops where he used the platforms led police to track him down in Mumbai’s Uppar Khairana area.
Authorities seized four mobile phones, a laptop, and a passport during his arrest. He has since been remanded to judicial custody.
The operation was executed by a team led by Additional SP Mahanteshwar Jiddi, DSP Girish Bhojannavar, and SI Rudrayya Hiremath.
