Peter Obi Demands State of Emergency Over Rising Insecurity
Nigeria is reeling from fresh waves of deadly attacks that left soldiers, civilians, and security officers dead.
Labour Party’s Peter Obi warns the country faces a grave crisis demanding urgent government action.
Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s presidential candidate in the 2023 general elections, has raised alarm over the worsening security situation in Nigeria. He described the recent wave of killings across the country as a clear sign that Nigeria is facing a severe national crisis.

In a statement shared on his official X handle on Sunday, Obi said Nigeria is “bleeding” and urged the federal government to immediately declare a state of emergency on insecurity. His comments came after a violent weekend in which eight personnel of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) were killed in Edo State, while five soldiers and no fewer than 58 civilians lost their lives in Borno State.
The former Anambra State governor noted that the killings reflect a “full-blown security emergency” that must be addressed without delay. He also extended condolences to the families of the victims and demanded swift action to arrest and prosecute those responsible.
“When over 100 Nigerians are killed in a single weekend, our casualty figures rival those of countries officially at war,” Obi said. He stressed that it was no longer business as usual, adding that the government must “mobilize every resource, every agency, every state, and suspend all distractions” to reclaim Nigeria from lawlessness.
