Sanwo-Olu Hails Team Lagos Historic Victory at 9th National Youth Games

Team Lagos dominated the 9th National Youth Games in Asaba, clinching 110 medals to emerge overall champions.

Governor Sanwo-Olu praised the athletes’ historic feat and reaffirmed Lagos’ strong commitment to sports development.

Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has congratulated Team Lagos for their record-breaking victory at the 9th National Youth Games, which concluded on Saturday at the Stephen Keshi Stadium in Asaba, Delta State.

The Lagos contingent emerged as the overall champions, winning a remarkable total of 110 medals: 52 gold, 32 silver, and 26 bronze. This achievement highlights the state’s dominance in grassroots sports development.

As a result of this victory, Lagos solidifies its position at the forefront of Nigeria’s youth sports landscape, ahead of the host state, Delta, which secured second place with 37 gold, 38 silver, and 39 bronze medals. Meanwhile, Edo State, the defending champions, dropped to third place.

In a social media post on Sunday, Governor Sanwo-Olu praised the athletes, coaches, and the Lagos State Sports Commission for their dedication and preparation.

“I am immensely proud of Team Lagos for their outstanding performance at the 9th National Youth Games in Asaba, where they finished first on the medals table with a total of 110 medals; 52 gold medals, 32 silver, and 26 bronze,” he wrote.

The governor emphasized that the success reflects not only the talent of the athletes but also Lagos State’s sustained commitment to sports development.

“Our young athletes, together with their coaches and the Lagos State Sports Commission, have made history and demonstrated the strength of Lagos in sports,” he added.

Sanwo-Olu also revealed plans to host the victorious team in recognition of their achievement, noting that such celebrations would inspire future generations.

At the closing ceremony, Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori commended Team Lagos and other participants for their spirited displays. He also urged the National Sports Commission to intensify efforts against age cheating, warning that the credibility and fairness of the Youth Games must be preserved.

Oborevwori presented trophies to the winning state and reiterated the importance of consistent investment in youth sports across Nigeria.
