National Grid Failure Plunges Nigeria Into Widespread Blackout
Nigeria’s national electricity grid has collapsed again, plunging much of the country into darkness.
Millions face disrupted businesses, schools, and households as power generation falls to an alarming nationwide low.
Nigeria’s national electricity grid has failed yet again, cutting power to much of the country and leaving millions without supply.
As of 12:25 p.m. today, data from grid operators showed that only about 50 megawatts of electricity were available nationwide far below normal levels.
A closer look at the figures revealed:
- Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC) – roughly 20 MW
- Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company (IBEDC) – roughly 20 MW
- Benin Electricity Distribution Company (BEDC) – roughly 10 MW
- Eko, Enugu, Ikeja, Jos, Kaduna, Kano, Port Harcourt and Yola DisCos – zero megawatts each
The latest collapse reveals Nigeria’s persistent power-sector crisis, which has seen repeated grid failures despite ongoing government investments and reforms. The outage has disrupted businesses, schools and households nationwide, with some areas reporting a total loss of power since the early hours of the day.
Authorities have yet to give an official explanation for the latest breakdown, but energy analysts note that the national grid remains fragile due to inadequate generation, aging infrastructure, and transmission bottlenecks.
