The Anambra State Police Command says normalcy has returned to Onitsha Main Market after a violent clash between members of the Ocha Brigade, a state environmental enforcement team, and traders left several people injured.

According to the command, the incident occurred on the morning of September 9, 2025, after an altercation broke out, during which seven traders sustained gunshot wounds. The disturbance sparked tension within the busy market, prompting an urgent distress call to security agencies.

Commissioner of Police, CP Ikioye Orutugu, immediately dispatched tactical teams alongside other security agencies, led by the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of Operations. They were joined by the Area Commander for Onitsha, the Divisional Police Officer for the Main Market, and the Commander of the Anti-Cultism Squad.

The joint team swiftly intervened, calming the agitated traders and restoring order. The injured victims identified as Ebuka Orakwe, Orum Oluebube, Anthony Kosisochukwu, Ifeoma Ezema, Chinwe Igwe (22), and two others yet to be named were taken to hospital for treatment. Sadly, Chinwe Igwe was confirmed dead on arrival. Her body has been deposited in the mortuary for autopsy and preservation. The remaining victims are said to be responding well to medical care.

Police authorities have invited the leadership of the Ocha Brigade to assist in identifying those responsible for the shootings, with a view to prosecuting them. The command assured the public that market activities have since resumed and that continuous patrols are being carried out to maintain peace in the area.

SP Tochukwu Ikenga, spokesperson of the Anambra State Police Command, reiterated the force’s commitment to protecting lives and ensuring that those behind the violence are brought to justice.
