Charlie Kirk Shot Dead at Utah College Event, Authorities Hunt Shooter

Shock gripped Utah Valley University as conservative activist Charlie Kirk was fatally shot during an event.

Authorities launched an intense manhunt while leaders condemned the attack as a political assassination.

Conservative activist Charlie Kirk, a close ally of former U.S. President Donald Trump and co-founder of Turning Point USA, was shot and killed on Thursday during an event at Utah Valley University. Utah Governor Spencer Cox described the incident as “a political assassination.”

“This is a dark day for our state. It’s a tragic day for our nation,” Cox said while pledging to bring the shooter to justice.

Police said no one was in custody as of Thursday evening but confirmed they were searching for a person of interest. Earlier, the FBI had said a suspect was being questioned but later clarified that the individual had been released. No motive or charges have been announced.

Videos from the campus showed Kirk speaking under a white tent when a single shot rang out. He clutched his neck as blood poured out and the crowd screamed and ran for safety. The Associated Press verified the location as the Sorensen Centre courtyard at Utah Valley University.

Kirk, 31, was participating in a debate hosted by his organization when the shooting occurred. Moments before, he was answering a question about gun violence. “Do you know how many transgender Americans have been mass shooters over the last 10 years?” a member of the audience asked. Kirk replied, “Too many.”

The shooter reportedly fired from a rooftop nearby while wearing dark clothing. Cox vowed the suspect would face the full weight of the law in a state that still allows the death penalty.

Donald Trump confirmed Kirk’s death on his social media platform, calling him “Great, and even Legendary” and praising his influence on young conservatives.

Utah Valley University immediately evacuated the campus, cancelled classes, and advised people to shelter in place until police escorts arrived. Armed officers canvassed nearby neighborhoods, showing residents a photo of the person of interest and asking for information.

The event was the first stop on Kirk’s “The American Comeback Tour” and had sparked controversy on campus. A petition opposing his appearance drew nearly 1,000 signatures, but the university had earlier defended its decision to host him, citing its commitment to free speech and open dialogue.
