Kano Governor Submits Bill on Same-Sex Marriage to House of Assembly

Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf sends a bill to Kano Assembly to outlaw same-sex marriage and immoral acts.

He stresses the move protects Islamic values and traditions while preserving Kano’s cultural identity.

Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf of Kano State has sent a bill to the State House of Assembly seeking to ban same-sex marriage and other activities described as immoral in the state. The governor approved the bill during the 31st State Executive Council meeting held at the Government House Annex in Kwankwasiyya City.

According to a statement from his spokesperson, Sanusi Bature, the governor said his administration would not compromise on Islamic values and cultural traditions. He emphasized that Kano must continue to protect its religious and social heritage.

The proposed law aims to prohibit same-sex marriage and certain local practices known as Madugo and Liwadi, which the government considers contrary to Islamic teachings. Governor Yusuf said, “Under no circumstance will we allow acts that contradict our religion and traditions to take root in Kano. This government is duty-bound to protect the moral integrity of our society.”

He further stated that once the State Assembly passes the bill, anyone found guilty of taking part in or encouraging same-sex marriage or similar practices would face strict legal consequences. Governor Yusuf also expressed confidence that lawmakers would handle the proposal quickly because of its significance to the moral and social wellbeing of Kano State.
