Resident Doctors Call Off Nationwide Warning Strike

Nigeria’s resident doctors have ended their nationwide warning strike just two days after it began.

NARD says suspending the action shows goodwill as the government promises to address demands.

The Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) has called off its nationwide warning strike just two days after it began. The industrial action, which started on Friday, had affected many public hospitals across the country.

In a brief statement to journalists on Saturday evening, NARD President Dr. Tope Osundara said the association decided to suspend the strike and asked members to return to duty on Sunday. According to him, “Some of our demands have been met. The government has promised to look into other issues. Strike suspended; resumption to work tomorrow. We did this as a sign of goodwill and to assist Nigerians who are seeking healthcare in our various facilities.”

The stoppage had caused significant strain in public hospitals, as consultants and other health workers tried to handle the growing number of patients without resident doctors.

The doctors had embarked on the strike to demand the release of the 2025 Medical Residency Training Fund, settlement of five months’ arrears from the 25 to 35 per cent Consolidated Medical Salary Structure review, payment of outstanding salary backlogs and arrears of the 2024 accoutrement allowance.

Other demands included the prompt payment of specialist allowances, recognition of postgraduate certificates and better welfare conditions for resident doctors working across Nigeria.
