Edo Police Recover ₦300,000 Allegedly Extorted from Furniture Maker, Detain Officers
Edo Police confirmed officers accused of extorting ₦300,000 from a furniture maker are in custody.
The full sum was recovered and returned as the officers face disciplinary action.
The Edo State Police Command has responded to a viral video posted by an influencer known as @miss_natural1, which alleged that officers attached to the Oba Market Area Command in Benin City extorted ₦300,000 from a young furniture maker.
According to the influencer, the officers stopped the artisan for a search and, despite finding no incriminating items, allegedly demanded ₦1 million to release him, later settling for ₦300,000.
In a statement issued on Monday, September 15, Police spokesperson CSP Joel Yamu confirmed that the officers involved have been identified, and the entire amount recovered and returned to the victim. He said the officers have been placed in custody and will face disciplinary action under Nigeria Police Force regulations.
Yamu noted that the Command has also introduced strict administrative measures at the Oba Market Area Command to promote discipline, professionalism, and respect for citizens’ rights.
He further stressed that under Commissioner of Police Monday Agbonika, Edo residents are encouraged to report misconduct to the Public Complaints Bureau or the Complaints Response Unit through the dedicated phone lines 08150999335 and 08100389992.
The spokesperson assured the public that the Command is committed to upholding professionalism, integrity, and accountability in its service to the people of Edo State.
