Ruben Amorim had previously enjoyed a strong record against Pep Guardiola, with last season’s dramatic 3–2 comeback win at the Etihad the highlight of his reign so far. United also entered the clash buoyed by a late victory over Burnley, but City exposed their frailties once again.

United started brightly, pressing high and forcing mistakes, with City missing their usual distributor at the back. Yet Guardiola’s men quickly took control, dominating midfield and breaking through when Jérémy Doku skipped past Luke Shaw and crossed for Foden to head home his first league goal since January.

Although City were far from their fluent best, they went into half-time ahead, with United still clinging to hope. That optimism faded quickly after the restart as Haaland coolly finished off a flowing City move orchestrated by Foden.

United nearly collapsed completely when Manuel Ugarte’s mistake gifted Haaland a golden chance, but the Norwegian’s effort hit the inside of the post. He made no mistake minutes later, sealing his brace after Gianluigi Donnarumma produced a brilliant stop to deny Bryan Mbeumo.

From there, City looked set to run riot. Tijjani Reijnders missed a sitter for a potential fourth, while United wasted late chances for a meaningless consolation.

The result leaves Amorim with just eight wins in 31 Premier League games as United boss, as questions continue to mount over his reign.
