Nigeria’s sprint queen Tobi Amusan has claimed silver in the women’s 100m hurdles final at the Tokyo 2025 World Championships, securing the nation’s first medal of the tournament.

Amusan clocked 12.29 seconds to finish just behind Switzerland’s Ditaji Kambundji, who stormed to gold in a new national record of 12.24 seconds.
The United States’ Grace Stark claimed bronze with a time of 12.34 seconds, while compatriot Masai Russell narrowly missed the podium in fourth place at 12.44 seconds.
The 27-year-old Nigerian, from Ijebu Ode, recovered from a poor start to chase down the leaders. She was neck-and-neck with Kambundji over the final hurdles before the Swiss hurdler edged ahead in the last stride, stunning a star-studded field and thrilling the Tokyo crowd.
Amusan’s silver adds to her growing collection of international accolades, reaffirming her status as one of the world’s top hurdlers and Nigeria’s most consistent performer on the global stage.
Her silver medal marks Nigeria’s breakthrough at the championships, putting the country on the medal table. The performance has also boosted team morale as other athletes continue their campaigns.
In the men’s 400m hurdles, Ezekiel Nathaniel advanced to the semi-finals after winning heat 5 with a time of 48.37 seconds. Meanwhile, long jumper Charles Edward Godfred bowed out after leaping 7.79m, falling short of the qualification mark for the final.
Amusan, who made history as the first Nigerian world champion and world record holder in the 100m hurdles in 2022, continues to set the standard for Nigerian athletics.
