Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, on Tuesday, September 16, 2025, held a strategic meeting with the leadership of the pan-Yoruba socio-political organization Afenifere under the chairmanship of Oba Oladipo Olaitan. The meeting, held in a cordial atmosphere, was aimed at deepening conversations on Nigeria’s pressing socio-economic issues and exploring pathways for national renewal.

During the engagement, Obi commended Afenifere, along with its allied groups the Pan Niger Delta Forum (PANDEF) and the Middle Belt Forum for their consistent advocacy for fairness, unity, and equitable development across the country. He noted that these organizations had over the years been at the forefront of pushing for policies and actions that strengthen Nigeria’s cohesion, protect citizens’ rights, and ensure no group is left behind in governance or development.

In a statement issued after the meeting, Obi disclosed that their discussions centered on critical areas affecting Nigerians, particularly education, healthcare, and poverty alleviation. He stressed that these sectors represent the foundation of a thriving society and must be prioritized to rebuild confidence in government and foster inclusive growth. According to him, tackling these challenges requires coordinated action across regions, with communities and leaders working hand in hand to deliver measurable results.

Obi expressed appreciation to the Afenifere leadership for their “courage in always standing out for justice and unity.” He described the meeting as highly productive, noting that it provided a platform to exchange ideas on policies that can create opportunities for young people, improve public health outcomes, and lift millions of Nigerians out of poverty.

He further emphasized that his engagement with Afenifere is part of a broader effort to rally key stakeholders across the country to build consensus on national priorities, strengthen democratic institutions, and deliver tangible progress to citizens.
