Tinubu Lifts Rivers State Emergency Rule, Fubara to Resume Duties Thursday

Tinubu has lifted the state of emergency in Rivers State, restoring full political and administrative activities.

Key officials, including Governor Fubara, will resume their duties as governance returns to normal.

President Bola Tinubu has officially ended the state of emergency imposed on Rivers State and directed the immediate return of suspended officials to their positions. The announcement came in a statement issued by the Presidency on Wednesday, signaling the restoration of normal governance in the state.

According to the statement, Governor Siminalayi Fubara will resume work on Thursday, September 18, after being out of office since the emergency declaration. The President also instructed Deputy Governor Ngozi Nma Odu and members of the Rivers State House of Assembly to return to their offices. Speaker Martins Amaewhule is also expected to reconvene legislative activities.

Tinubu originally declared the emergency rule six months ago to address a political and administrative stalemate in the oil-rich state. The decision at the time temporarily suspended the operations of both the executive and legislative arms of government in Rivers State. By ending the emergency, the President said his administration is confident that peace and stability have been restored.

“It gives me great pleasure to declare that the emergency in Rivers State shall end with effect from midnight today,” Tinubu stated. With the lifting of the measure, all key officials are expected to resume their constitutional roles from September 18, 2025, marking a new phase for governance and political reconciliation in the state.
