Edo Govt Seals Market Square Over ₦27m Unpaid Taxes
Edo State seals Market Square over ₦27 million unpaid taxes covering 2018 to 2023.
Officials say the premises will be reopened once the company settles the full outstanding amount.
The Edo State Internal Revenue Service (EIRS) on Friday sealed the premises of Market Square (Sunday Foods) for failing to remit ₦27,005,117.97 in outstanding taxes.

According to a statement by Courage Eboigbe, Head of Corporate Communications at EIRS, the liabilities arose from an audit exercise covering the period 2018 to 2023, during which the company was assessed for Pay-As-You-Earn (PAYE) and Withholding Tax obligations.
The EIRS explained that the audit findings were duly communicated to Market Square, which did not contest the assessment, making it “final and conclusive.”
Following the company’s refusal to pay, the revenue agency secured a court order authorizing the sealing of the premises to enforce compliance.
“The EIRS is prepared to unseal the premises immediately upon confirmation of full payment,” the statement said.
Eboigbe stressed that tax payment is a civic responsibility for all individuals and organizations operating in Edo State.
He noted that tax revenues remain critical for the government to provide infrastructure and public services, while also enhancing a business’s credibility and corporate image.
The EIRS commended compliant taxpayers and urged others to meet their obligations promptly to avoid disruptions to business operations.
