Nigerian Army troops in Delta State arrest a suspected cult leader and neutralise another gang member.
The operation targets violent groups linked to kidnappings and weapons, reinforcing security in Warri.
Troops of 63 Brigade, Nigerian Army/Sector 1 of the Joint Task Force (JTF), South South, Operation Delta Safe (OPDS), have arrested a suspected cult leader and neutralized another member of his gang during a security operation in Pessu Community, Warri South Local Government Area of Delta State.
According to Acting Assistant Director of Army Public Relations, Captain Iliyasu Bawa-Rijau, the operation took place on Thursday, September 18, 2025. He said the arrested suspect, identified as Stephen Fragene Pessu, has already confessed to belonging to a violent gang accused of terrorizing residents in Warri and surrounding communities.
Security sources disclosed that the group has been repeatedly linked to kidnappings for ransom, with evidence suggesting they received large sums to free victims. Intelligence also indicated that the gang possessed dangerous weapons used in previous clashes.
During a follow-up raid to apprehend other members, troops engaged the suspects in a firefight. One of the men, identified as Mr. Dele, was fatally shot, and a pump-action gun was recovered from the scene.
Army officials confirmed that the operation remains ongoing as troops continue to search the area to apprehend more gang members and seize additional weapons.
Brigadier M.A. Shonibare, Commander of 63 Brigade/Sector 1, commended the troops for their professionalism and resilience. He pledged that the unit will intensify efforts to eliminate criminal networks and ensure the safety of lives and property across Delta State.
He also urged residents to remain calm and continue their normal activities, assuring them that the military has reinforced security measures to protect communities in the region.
