The Enugu State Government has condemned the killing of Rev. Fr. Mathew Eya of the Nsukka Catholic Diocese, describing it as a brutal and senseless act. The priest was reportedly attacked and shot dead by unidentified gunmen along the Alumona–Eha Ndiagu Road in Nsukka Local Government Area on Friday, September 19, 2025.

In a statement signed by the Commissioner for Information and Communication, Dr. Malachy Agbo, the state government expressed deep sympathy to the Catholic Diocese of Nsukka, the family of the deceased, and Catholic faithful across the state. The government called the incident “cowardly and cold-blooded,” pledging to do everything within its power to ensure the killers are apprehended and prosecuted.

According to the statement, protecting lives and property remains a top priority for the administration. The government also assured residents that it would use all available resources, including advanced technology and credible intelligence, to track down those behind the crime.
