CJN to Swear In 57 Senior Advocates of Nigeria as New Legal Year Opens

Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun, will on Monday, September 29, 2025, formally administer the oath of office to 57 newly elevated Senior Advocates of Nigeria (SANs) at the Supreme Court’s main courtroom in Abuja.

According to a statement issued on Sunday by the Director of Information and Public Relations of the apex court, Dr. Festus Akande, the ceremony is part of events marking the official start of the Supreme Court’s 2025/2026 legal year. Justice Kekere-Ekun is expected to deliver a keynote address reviewing the court’s performance during the 2024/2025 legal year and outlining key developments across the judiciary.
Other top legal figures will also speak at the special session, including the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, the Chairman of the Body of Senior Advocates of Nigeria, and the President of the Nigerian Bar Association. Their presentations are expected to focus on ongoing reforms and major issues affecting the administration of justice.
The Supreme Court noted that it went on its annual vacation on July 21, 2025, after what it described as a remarkably productive legal year. It added that all activities to open the new legal year will begin at 10:00 a.m. on Monday.
It will be recalled that the Legal Practitioners’ Privileges Committee, on July 24, 2025, announced the elevation of 57 lawyers to the rank of Senior Advocate of Nigeria 56 practicing advocates and one academic.
