ICAN Reiterates Zero Tolerance for Exam Malpractice After Viral Impersonation Video
ICAN reiterates zero tolerance for exam malpractice after a viral video alleged impersonation at its tests.
The accounting body launches an investigation, promising strict action to protect its exam integrity.
The Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN) has reaffirmed its uncompromising position against examination malpractice after a video surfaced online alleging impersonation at one of its tests.

The footage, which quickly gained traction on social media, shows two suspected stand-ins allegedly writing ICAN exams on behalf of other candidates. One of the alleged proxies, identified only as “Kay,” was accused of sitting for the test on behalf of a bank manager, while a female proxy reportedly claimed she was writing for a commissioner in Taraba State.
Reacting in a statement issued Monday and signed by Registrar/Chief Executive Lanre Olasunkanmi, ICAN stressed that its examinations adhere to internationally recognized standards and that any infraction will attract severe penalties.
According to the Institute, it enforces a “zero-tolerance” policy toward cheating, including impersonation, and takes every attempt to compromise its processes seriously. The accounting body confirmed that it has opened an investigation into the allegations and vowed to apply appropriate disciplinary actions in line with its regulations.
ICAN also appealed to the public to avoid speculation until the inquiry is concluded, assuring stakeholders that the integrity of its examinations remains intact and that it will continue to safeguard the reputation of the accounting profession in Nigeria and globally.
