FUTES in Iyin Ekiti will begin academic activities in October 2025 with four faculties.

The new university promises disciplined, solution-driven education to train future leaders and tackle Nigeria’s development challenges.

The Federal University of Technology and Environmental Sciences (FUTES), Iyin Ekiti, is set to commence academic activities in October 2025, starting with programmes across four faculties.

Vice Chancellor Prof. Gbenga Aribisala announced that the institution will begin operations with:

  • Faculty of Engineering
  • Faculty of Computer Science
  • Faculty of Natural and Applied Sciences
  • Faculty of Environmental Sciences

Speaking at a reception in Ifaki Ekiti organized by the 1979 set of Ifaki Grammar School Old Students Association (IGSOSA), Aribisala said the new university was laying the foundation for a fully residential system designed to produce disciplined graduates and future leaders.

“Our vision is clear: FUTES must stand out as the number one university in Africa. We are committed to building a problem-solving, human-centered institution. This is not about making money, but about making Nigeria great,” the VC said.

He pledged that the university would prioritize character and learning, and recruit only credible scholars. Advertisements for academic and non-academic positions will soon be placed in national media and on the institution’s official website, he added, warning applicants against fraudulent sites or agents.

Aribisala disclosed that the National Universities Commission (NUC) had already conducted a resource verification exercise and expressed satisfaction with the available facilities.

The university is now awaiting formal clearance from the NUC and the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) to begin student admissions in October.

The VC called for support from public-spirited individuals to help provide hostels, scholarships, and other infrastructure, noting that government funding alone would not be sufficient.

“If we have people who want to donate buildings, we will name them after them. Those willing to provide hostels can run them and charge rent. The government cannot do it all,” he said.

Coordinator of the IGSOSA 1979 set, Mr Olajide Familoye, described Aribisala’s appointment as “a collective success,” expressing confidence in his ability to lay a strong foundation for the university. FUTES Registrar, Mr Oluwole Dada, also assured that the institution was prepared to meet the people’s expectations for excellence.

President Bola Tinubu had earlier appointed Senator Binta Garba as Pro-Chancellor and Chairperson of the Governing Council. Garba, a seasoned politician and administrator, previously served as Senator for Adamawa North (2015–2019) and as a member of the House of Representatives (1999–2011).
