NERC: 148,077 Electricity Customers Meted In May, June 2025
Nigeria’s power regulator reports 148,077 new electricity meters installed nationwide between May and June 2025.
This small rise increases metering rates and shows continued moves to reduce estimated bills.
The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) has revealed that 148,077 electricity customers were newly metered across the country between May and June 2025.
According to NERC’s Metering Status Factsheet released on Wednesday, 63,180 meters were installed in May, while 84,897 were installed in June, bringing the total number of metered customers nationwide to 6,422,933.
This increased Nigeria’s national metering rate slightly, from 53.78% in May to 54.33% in June 2025, while active electricity customers also rose marginally from 11,784,842 in May to 11,821,194 in June.
DisCo performance rankings
- Ikeja DisCo led with the highest metering rate at 84.65%, followed by Eko (83.33%) and Abuja (73.06%).
- Yola DisCo recorded the lowest metering rate at 28.55%, while Jos (29.51%) and Kaduna (33.46%) also remained at the bottom.
- Aba DisCo emerged as the most improved, increasing its metering rate from 37.88% in May to 45.17% in June, following the installation of 12,376 meters.
- Benin DisCo also crossed into the 50% bracket, rising from 49.95% to 50.33% during the same period.
Despite these gains, seven out of 12 DisCos remain below 50% metering coverage, leaving millions of customers at the mercy of estimated billing, a practice long criticized as arbitrary and exploitative.
To address this, NERC has continued its policy of setting monthly energy caps for feeders, limiting the amount that unmetered customers can be billed. However, reports indicate that some DisCos still overbill customers, a practice that has attracted sanctions from the regulator.
