Defense Group Hands Over Weapons to Chadian Army Under Peace Accord
A key militia in Chad’s Tibesti region has surrendered weapons under the Miski peace accord.
Officials hail the handover as a breakthrough for stability and reconciliation in northern Chad.
A militia calling itself the Defense Group Difa Al-Watan, one of the signatories to the Miski peace accord, has surrendered a large stockpile of weapons and landmines to the Chadian military in Modra, Tibesti Province.

Senior military officials confirmed that the cache was formally transferred to the Chief of Defense Staff, General Abakar Abdelkerim Daoud, as part of the ongoing rollout of the peace deal reached earlier this year.
Authorities described the handover as a major milestone in efforts to stabilize northern Chad, an area long troubled by armed groups and community defense militias.
Speaking at the ceremony, General Daoud praised the initiative, saying it showed the group was serious about ending hostilities. He reaffirmed the government’s pledge to carry out the terms of the Miski Agreement.
Local leaders in Tibesti also reacted positively, voicing hope that the gesture would open the door to reconciliation and new development projects in the region.
The Miski Agreement brokered after extended negotiations calls for the disarmament and reintegration of fighters alongside investment in local infrastructure to build sustainable peace in Tibesti.
