Ekiti Government Launches Renovation of Over 250 School Projects Amid Viral Video Controversy

Ekiti SUBEB has awarded contracts to rehabilitate over 250 public school projects across the state.

Officials say the move addresses infrastructure challenges and ensures safer learning spaces for pupils.

The Chairman of the Ekiti State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), Femi Akinwumi, has announced that contracts have been awarded for the rehabilitation of more than 250 infrastructure projects in public schools across the state.

Akinwumi said in a statement issued in Ado Ekiti on Saturday that the contractors would soon move to site, noting that the 2024 Universal Basic Education Commission/SUBEB program also covers thousands of furniture projects.

He made the remarks while responding to a viral video showing a flooded block of classrooms at St. Westley Primary School in Omuo Ekiti, Ekiti East Local Government Area, where a rainstorm had reportedly blown off the roof.

The SUBEB boss urged residents to ignore claims that the state government had neglected the school’s appeal for repairs. He clarified that pupils and teachers were relocated to new classrooms within the school since the previous academic session, and that the damaged block was already included in the 2024 UBEC/SUBEB intervention plans and proposed for direct intervention funding in 2025.

According to Akinwumi, the board is investigating why students appeared in the video occupying the condemned classrooms, and anyone found responsible would face sanctions.

He added that the state government had invested in multiple facilities for public primary schools, including new buildings, toilets, furniture and perimeter fencing. The recent contract awards, he said, would soon translate into physical renovations across the state.

Akinwumi explained that rainstorms are a natural phenomenon but stressed that proactive measures have been taken over the past four years to minimize damage, including enforcing the use of high-grade aluminium roofing sheets in SUBEB buildings an approach which he said has significantly reduced storm-related destruction in schools.
