Tyla had earlier sparked controversy after publicly identifying as “colored”, a term widely accepted in South Africa to describe people of mixed descent but considered offensive in the United States due to its history during segregation. The remark drew criticism from many African Americans online.

In a recent appearance on U.S. radio show The Breakfast Club, Nigerian singer Tiwa Savage apologized to the African-American community on Tyla’s behalf, introducing herself as the “Water” hitmaker’s elder. The apology angered many South Africans, who felt Savage had no right to speak for one of their own without understanding their racial and cultural context.

During her performance at the Global Citizen Festival in New York, Tyla appeared to distance herself from the apology. “Sorry, I am not sorry,” she declared before performing her song Mr Media. The statement was widely seen as a direct response to Tiwa Savage’s remarks, showcasing Tyla’s decision to stand on her statement.
