Omokri: “May Nigeria Keep Happening to Me”

Reno Omokri has rejected the phrase “Nigeria happened,” insisting the country brings more positives than negatives.

He cited growth, energy gains, and stronger currency value, urging citizens to embrace national pride.

Former presidential aide, Reno Omokri, has said he wants Nigeria to “keep happening” to him, pushing back against the negative expression “Nigeria happened” that resurfaced online after the tragic death of ARISE News correspondent Somtochukwu Maduagwu.

In a post shared on Tuesday, Omokri wrote that he would be glad for Nigeria to continue happening to him throughout his lifetime, urging people to highlight the positives rather than only the negatives.

He criticized those who link misfortune to the country but ignore the benefits they enjoy. According to him, “When difficulties arise, some quickly blame Nigeria, yet they accept the good things that come their way as personal achievement instead of acknowledging the nation.”

Omokri argued that every country faces hardship, pointing out that the United States records about 20,000 murders annually a figure he said is more than double Nigeria’s rate. “This world is not paradise; every nation has its challenges. Yet you hardly hear Americans condemning their country because of crime rates,” he added.

He highlighted what he sees as Nigeria’s recent progress, including record-breaking electricity generation of 5,801.84MW, increased daily energy output, declining inflation, and economic growth of $67 billion in two years. He also claimed that Nigeria is now a net exporter of refined petroleum products, with fuel imports significantly reduced.

“Nigeria’s exports of refined products have positioned it as the largest in West Africa,” Omokri said, stressing that only a few civilian governments under Yar’Adua, Jonathan, and Tinubu had ever achieved this.

He also argued that the naira retains stronger purchasing power compared to several African currencies, saying that $100 spent in Nigeria stretches further than in Ghana, Kenya, Cameroon, Ethiopia, or South Africa.

Concluding, Omokri described Nigeria as “a great but imperfect nation” and encouraged citizens to show pride and focus on opportunities rather than only shortcomings.
