NAFDAC Closes Two Chinese Supermarkets, Eight Cosmetics Shops in Abuja
NAFDAC has shut down two Chinese-owned supermarkets in Jabi and eight cosmetics shops in Wuse Market, Abuja.
Officials seized products worth over ₦170m for being unapproved, expired, or wrongly labelled.
The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control has closed down two Chinese-owned supermarkets in Jabi District and eight cosmetics outlets in Wuse Market, Abuja, for selling products that did not meet regulatory standards.

According to the agency, the operation was carried out on the instructions of its Director-General, Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, and led on the ground by enforcement officer Musa Embugushiki. Products worth over ₦170 million were confiscated during the raid.
The supermarkets, located on Mike Akhigbe Way and Ebitu Ukiwe Street, were accused of stocking unapproved food items with labels written only in Chinese. NAFDAC noted that all regulated products in Nigeria are required to carry English inscriptions to ensure consumer safety and proper identification.
Although the operator of the Ebitu Ukiwe Street branch denied wrongdoing, officials confirmed the store was open and actively selling items that had not been cleared by the agency.
In Wuse Market, eight shops dealing in beauty and wellness products were sealed for offering expired, banned, or unregistered cosmetics, including body enhancement and whitening formulas. Investigators also discovered individuals posing as pharmacists and dermatologists, marketing potentially harmful substances to unsuspecting buyers.
Items taken away included Wenicks Capsules, Maxman Capsules, breast enlargement supplements, weight gain mixtures, and whitening vitamin gummies.
Officials stressed that the clampdown was aimed at protecting public health and curbing the circulation of unsafe and misleading products in the Nigerian market.
