FRSC Apprehends 250 Drivers in Two Days for Overloading

The FRSC in Abuja has arrested over 250 commercial drivers in two days for overloading vehicles.

Sector Commander Felix Theman said mobile courts will now ensure swift prosecution of offenders.

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Federal Capital Territory Command, has apprehended more than 250 commercial drivers within two days for overloading their vehicles. The action followed the full enforcement of safety regulations across Abuja.

FCT Sector Commander, Corps Commander Felix Theman, made this known in a statement signed by the command’s Public Education Officer, Helen Ntaji, on Saturday. He said the enforcement, which began on October 2, focused on commercial vehicles carrying two passengers in the front seat, a common violation of road safety rules.

Theman explained that the high number of offenders recorded in just two days showed the extent of non-compliance despite months of sensitization and meetings with transport unions. He stated that his administration remains committed to restoring passenger safety and dignity, adding that enforcement was the most civil and effective means to ensure compliance.

According to him, overloading makes seatbelt use impossible, damages suspension systems and tyres, and reduces driver control during emergencies. He said the operation is being conducted alongside mobile magistrate courts to ensure immediate prosecution of offenders.

Theman added that full activation of mobile courts across the FCT will begin on October 6 to boost enforcement. He warned drivers using vehicles below safety standards to upgrade them or risk impoundment and urged passengers to support the campaign for safer and more dignified transportation.
