Nigeria has launched the #MakeSafetyStatement campaign as FRSC partnered with the United Nations in Lagos.
Global figures like Didier Drogba and Jean Todt joined officials urging urgent action on road safety.
At the Black Diamond Hotel in Victoria Island, Lagos, the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) joined forces with the United Nations to formally launch the #MakeSafetyStatement Campaign in Nigeria on October 3, 2025. The high-level press conference addressed the growing concern over what experts described as the “silent pandemic” of road crashes.

Key speakers included FRSC Corps Marshal Shehu Mohammed, the UN Secretary-General’s Special Envoy for Road Safety, Jean Todt, football legend Didier Drogba, and Abimbola Gaga of JCDecaux, the world’s leading outdoor advertising company. The event was moderated by FRSC’s Corps Public Education Officer, Assistant Corps Marshal Olusegun Ogungbemide.

In his welcome address, Corps Marshal Mohammed restated the FRSC’s focus on reducing road crashes in line with the United Nations Decade of Action for Road Safety. He stressed that the campaign represents another step in the agency’s determination to align national strategies with global best practices.
While formally unveiling the initiative, Jean Todt emphasized that road safety must become part of daily life for all road users. He explained that simple measures, such as wearing seatbelts, putting on helmets, and driving responsibly, have the potential to prevent thousands of unnecessary deaths. Todt added that by late 2026 the campaign would have expanded to nearly 80 countries and almost 1,000 cities, creating a truly global movement.

Abimbola Gaga highlighted JCDecaux’s commitment to using sustainable advertising platforms to spread awareness and positively influence public attitudes toward safe driving. On his part, Didier Drogba expressed confidence that the involvement of renowned global and local figures will inspire the public to embrace safer road practices.
The gathering ended with a renewed call for unity among government agencies, international organizations, celebrities, and citizens in building safer roads and saving lives across Nigeria.
