Tinubu Preaches Religious Tolerance, Says Faith Should Unite, Not Divide Nigerians

President Bola Tinubu has called on Nigerians to promote love and religious tolerance across all faiths.

He said religion should unite, not divide, as he shared lessons from his own family.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has urged Nigerians to embrace religious tolerance and peaceful coexistence, stressing that faith should be a source of unity rather than conflict.

The President made the appeal on Saturday, October 4, during the funeral service of Madam Lydia Yilwatda, the late mother of All Progressives Congress (APC) National Chairman, Dr. Nentawe Yilwatda, who passed away in August at the age of 83.

Speaking at the event, Tinubu reflected on the importance of love, mutual respect, and understanding among citizens of diverse religious beliefs. He said Nigeria’s strength lies in its diversity, adding that differences in faith should never be used to sow division or hatred.

Drawing from his personal experience, the President spoke about the peaceful coexistence within his own family. He explained that while he was born and raised as a Muslim, his wife, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, is a Christian pastor. Despite practicing different faiths, he said, religion has never caused friction in their marriage.

According to him, true religion is measured by love, character, and good deeds rather than one’s chosen mode of worship. He emphasized that all believers are ultimately accountable to the same Almighty God.

“Hatred is not an option for us,” Tinubu said, calling on Nigerians to focus on the values that unite rather than divide them. “I have never tried to change or convert my wife’s belief. She prays for me, and we live in peace. That is what faith should represent understanding and compassion.”

The President also paid tribute to the late Madam Lydia Yilwatda, describing her as a woman of deep faith, humility, and service to humanity. He prayed for the repose of her soul and comfort for the Yilwatda family, commending the APC chairman for upholding the values his mother instilled in him.

Tinubu concluded by urging Nigerians to continue praying for national peace, unity, and progress, noting that only through mutual respect and love can the country achieve its full potential.
