France’s political scene has been thrown into renewed uncertainty following the sudden resignation of Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu, barely weeks after assuming office.
Lecornu, who became France’s fifth prime minister in under two years, stepped down on Sunday, just hours after unveiling his new cabinet. His departure has deepened the leadership crisis facing President Emmanuel Macron’s government and raised further questions about the country’s political stability.
Appointed in early September, Lecornu was tasked with rebuilding public trust, securing parliamentary cooperation, and presenting a credible 2026 budget plan. His government was expected to introduce tough economic measures aimed at controlling spending and increasing revenue through new taxes. However, he reportedly faced internal divisions and mounting opposition in parliament, making it difficult to advance his agenda.
Before his appointment, Lecornu had served as France’s defence minister and was regarded as one of Macron’s close allies. His resignation came ahead of a scheduled appearance before the National Assembly, where he was expected to present his government’s policy roadmap.
France’s political crisis has drawn the attention of European investors and officials in Brussels, who are concerned about the country’s rising debt levels.
