Tragedy in Benue: Five Siblings Drown as Family Boat Capsizes in Obagaji
Five siblings tragically drowned when a boat carrying their family capsized in Agatu, Benue State.
The parents survived, but rescue efforts came too late to save the children aged three to twelve.
A heartbreaking tragedy struck the Obagaji community in Agatu Local Government Area of Benue State on Sunday evening, October 5, when five children from the same family drowned after a boat carrying them and their parents capsized in a river.

Eyewitnesses said the family was returning home when their small wooden boat reportedly lost balance midstream and overturned, plunging all seven occupants into the water. While the parents managed to survive, all five of their children drowned before rescuers could reach them.
According to residents, local divers and community members immediately began rescue efforts upon hearing the cries for help, but their attempts came too late to save the children. “By the time the divers got to the spot, the children had already gone under. They were later brought out, but none of them made it,” a community source said.
The deceased children were said to be between the ages of three and twelve. Their bodies were later recovered and taken to the family home, where the atmosphere was filled with grief and disbelief. Neighbors described the couple as hardworking and devoted parents who had moved to the area in search of better opportunities.
The incident has plunged the entire community into mourning. Residents gathered in large numbers at the family’s residence on Monday to offer comfort and prayers to the bereaved parents. Many were seen shedding tears as they recounted the close bond the children shared.
Community leaders have called on local authorities to improve safety measures on rivers frequently used for transport within the area. They also appealed for government support to provide safer boats and life jackets for residents who rely on water transportation for daily activities.
As of press time, no official statement had been released by the Benue State Police Command or the State Emergency Management Agency regarding the incident.
