The University of Benin has banned all sign-out celebrations for graduating students.

The University of Benin (UNIBEN) has prohibited all forms of sign-out celebrations by graduating students, warning that violators will face severe disciplinary sanctions, including expulsion or withdrawal of certificates.

The directive was contained in a circular issued by the university’s Registrar, Mr. Ademola Bobola, on Tuesday, October 7, in Benin City. The circular, addressed to all members of the university community, stated that the decision followed a management meeting held on Monday, October 6, which reaffirmed an earlier Senate resolution banning sign-out activities on campus.

According to the statement, the university will not permit signing on T-shirts, playing of music, or any form of public display associated with sign-out events. “No sign-out celebration of any kind, including signing on T-shirts and playing of music, will be tolerated,” the circular read.

The management also warned that any student caught parading around campus in vehicles or engaging in disorderly conduct would face immediate disciplinary action. It further stated that unauthorized vehicles would not be allowed into the campus during the final week of second-semester examinations.

Additionally, the circular banned large gatherings around faculties, schools, or institutes after examinations and directed that photographers must not mount stands or galleries for the purpose of such celebrations.

The Registrar also advised parents and guardians of final-year students to refrain from visiting the university during the last days of examinations to prevent overcrowding and maintain order.

Bobola emphasized that the decision was aimed at preserving discipline, decorum, and the university’s academic environment. “Any violation of this directive will attract severe disciplinary sanctions, including withdrawal of certificate, rustication, and expulsion,” he warned.
