CAN Urges Government to End Killings and Protect Christian Communities Nationwide
The Christian Association of Nigeria has urged the Federal Government to act decisively against ongoing attacks on Christian communities.
It said the killings must end and justice be served for victims nationwide.
The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has called on the Federal Government to take firm, transparent, and equitable measures to stop the persistent killings and attacks targeting Christian communities across the country, especially in northern Nigeria.

In a statement issued by its President, Archbishop Daniel Okoh, CAN condemned the growing violence and said the loss of human life must never be treated as ordinary figures. The association described the ongoing attacks as alarming and demanded that the government respond with sincerity, compassion, and fairness.
Archbishop Okoh stated that many Christian communities have continued to suffer devastating assaults, destruction of churches, and displacement of families. “CAN affirms that Christian communities in parts of Nigeria, particularly in the North, have experienced brutal attacks, killings, and the destruction of places of worship. These are painful reminders of the urgent need for decisive government action to protect every citizen, regardless of their faith or region,” he said.
The association revealed that it has documented several cases of religiously motivated violence and has also reached out to international partners, including the International Criminal Court in The Hague, to raise awareness about the situation.
While acknowledging efforts by security agencies, CAN noted that the response to faith-based attacks has been inconsistent and, in many cases, inadequate. It urged the government to act swiftly to prevent further killings, protect vulnerable communities, and ensure justice for victims.
“The pain of families torn apart by violence must not be reduced to numbers,” the body warned, calling on Christian leaders nationwide to remain united and exercise restraint while pressing for justice.
Archbishop Okoh added that Nigeria’s recovery from violence depends on truth and unity. “Our healing will come not from denial or blame but from the courage to confront our failures, mourn together, and rebuild trust,” he said, reaffirming CAN’s stance that all Nigerians, regardless of religion, deserve equal protection and justice under the law.
