Soludo Swears In Anambra Electricity Regulatory Commission Members

Governor Charles Soludo has sworn in the newly confirmed Commissioners of the Anambra State Electricity Regulatory Commission.

He said their role is vital to building a sustainable and self-regulated power sector in the state.

Anambra State Governor, Prof. Charles Chukwuma Soludo, on Thursday administered the oath of office to the newly confirmed Commissioners of the Anambra State Electricity Regulatory Commission (ASERC) during the State Executive Council meeting at the Government House, Awka.

The swearing-in ceremony came two days after the Anambra State House of Assembly confirmed their nominations.

Those appointed include Prof. Frank Nwoye Okafor (Chairman and Chief Executive Commissioner), Dr. Geoffrey Okwuchukwu Nwokoye, Dr. Nnaemeka O. Ewelukwa, Engr. Anosike Emmanuel, and Barr. Chijioke Nnaemeka Obi all serving as Executive Commissioners.

ASERC, established under the Anambra State Electricity Law 2025, is responsible for regulating the state’s electricity market. Its functions include licensing operators, setting and reviewing tariffs, promoting renewable energy adoption, ensuring consumer protection, monitoring performance standards, resolving disputes, and advising the government on energy policies for sustainable growth.

Governor Soludo congratulated the new Commissioners, urging them to view their appointment as a call to service. He noted that their work would be crucial to Anambra’s transition toward a self-regulated and sustainable power system, in line with the Electricity Act 2023, which empowers states to manage their internal electricity markets.

“With the establishment of ASERC, Anambra is taking a major step toward full control of its power sector,” the governor said. “Your professionalism, integrity, and expertise will determine how far we go in building a reliable and transparent electricity market that supports industrialization, job creation, and prosperity.”

Presenting the appointees to the council, the Commissioner for Power and Water Resources, Engr. Julius Chukwuemeka, described the development as a milestone in Anambra’s power reform journey. He explained that the operationalization of ASERC positions the state to attract private investment, improve energy access, and ensure accountability across generation, transmission, and distribution.

“This is a strategic step towards domesticating the 2023 Nigerian Electricity Act,” Chukwuemeka said. “We now have a framework to regulate power activities effectively and drive a sustainable energy future for Anambra.”

He added that the new Commissioners bring extensive experience from national and international energy institutions, including the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC), Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN), and the Federal Ministry of Power.

Responding on behalf of his colleagues, Prof. Okafor thanked Governor Soludo and the state government for the confidence reposed in them. He pledged that the Commission would work diligently to protect consumers, expand electricity access particularly in rural and industrial areas and engage stakeholders transparently.

“We will serve with dedication and ensure that the electricity sector in Anambra becomes a model for others,” he said.
