The White House has criticized the Norwegian Nobel Committee for overlooking United States President Donald Trump in this year’s Nobel Peace Prize selection, which went instead to Venezuelan opposition leader Maria Corina Machado.

In a statement posted on X, White House Director of Communications Steven Cheung said the decision showed that the Nobel Committee prioritized politics over genuine efforts for peace.

“The Nobel Committee proved they place politics over peace. President Trump will continue making peace deals, ending wars, and saving lives. He has the heart of a humanitarian, and there will never be anyone like him who can move mountains with the sheer force of his will,” Cheung wrote.

Since returning to office for a second term in January, Trump has repeatedly claimed that he deserves the prestigious award for his role in resolving several global conflicts, claims that many international observers consider exaggerated.

On the eve of the Nobel announcement, Trump restated his belief that his administration’s efforts to broker a ceasefire in Gaza were proof of his commitment to peace. “This is the eighth war we have ended,” he said, while adding, “Whatever they do is fine. I didn’t do it for that; I did it because I’ve saved a lot of lives.”

Experts in Oslo, however, had predicted that Trump’s chances were slim. They argued that his “America First” policy and divisive approach to global diplomacy run contrary to the ideals of peace and international cooperation that underpin Alfred Nobel’s vision when he established the prize in 1895.

Trump, who met with Finland’s President Alexander Stubb at the White House on Thursday, has continued to portray himself as a global peacemaker despite ongoing criticism of his foreign policy and domestic rhetoric.

The Nobel Peace Prize Committee has not issued any official response to the White House’s statement.
